Active Practice
Hands-on projects, real discussions, and collaboration that turn ideas into skills.

Being AI ready means knowing how to think with AI, without AI and about AI. These six capabilities help young people build the judgment, habits and skills they need to thrive — now and in the future.

Work with AI as a powerful partner to learn, create and solve problems you couldn’t do before.
Use AI to learn, create and accomplish more — while continuing to build your own judgment and skills.
Use what you know to create, solve real problems, help others and contribute to your school, community and the world.
Develop the focus, effort and independent reasoning you need — especially when AI isn’t available or shouldn’t be used.
Question outputs, verify claims, recognize bias and think for yourself.
Know when not to use AI. Protect your attention, do the hard thinking, and build the skills that come from productive struggle.
Understand how AI works, its opportunities and risks, and what it means for you, your relationships and society.
Know what you stand for. Use your values, purpose and judgment to decide when AI should be used — and what should remain human.
Protect yourself and others. Understand privacy, identity, misinformation, manipulation and responsible use.
AI Ready Kids sets clear expectations for what strong AI-readiness programming looks like — active learning, human feedback, responsible use and visible evidence of growth.

Hands-on projects, real discussions, and collaboration that turn ideas into skills.

A human facilitator asks young people to explain their reasoning, challenges their thinking and gives feedback they can act on.

Student progress is tracked over time across key AI-readiness capabilities, using real work, reflection and feedback as evidence.
Parents can see what their child is developing, review evidence of progress and continue the conversation at home.

AI skills for young people should outlast any one tool — judgment, focus, problem solving, creativity and communication.

Young people learn to protect their privacy, check information, recognize bias and decide when — and when not — to use AI.

A LEARNING JOURNEY
AI Ready Kids uses a practical three-phase learning journey that providers can bring to life in different ways — building understanding, developing capability through practice, and helping young people apply what they learn in meaningful contexts.

AWARE

Build foundational understanding, spark curiosity and explore the possibilities and limits of AI.
In small groups, teens examine real AI decisions: Anthropic’s refusal to remove safeguards against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, and the RCMP’s use of Clearview AI facial recognition. They ask who benefits, who could be harmed, and which principles should guide each choice. Then they consider a student dilemma: someone submits an AI-written answer after rewriting it to sound like their own. What would they do, and why?
APPLY

Develop practical skills through hands-on practice, real examples and personalized guidance.
Facing dozens of unfamiliar biology terms, a Grade 11 student uploads permitted course materials to an AI tool. She uses AI to research learning science, checks the sources, and discovers retrieval practice and spaced review. Then she uses AI to build her own study tool around those methods and prepares for her assessment.
EVOLVE

Apply their learning in more complex and meaningful ways, build lasting habits, and prepare to thrive in a future where AI is everywhere.
A small team interviews staff at a local community centre and learns that families struggle to find current program times and hear about changes. The teens use AI to explore solutions and draft a mobile-friendly program finder. They test the mock-up with staff and visitors, revise it from their feedback, and build a working version for the centre’s website.

EVIDENCE OF GROWTH
AI Ready Kids uses a simple, consistent evidence approach so young people, families and providers can see what’s changing — over time. The examples below illustrate the evidence approach; they are not live dashboards or verified learner results.
